Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

Etsy is a lot. Part of the beauty of the site is that any independent creator can create a shop on Etsy, and sell their wares. This abundance of creativity however can lead to a little overwhelm for the casual shopper. As I recently explored Etsy’s curation of Black makers on the site, I was overwhelmed—and I found myself wanting to curate my own list of personal favorites so that I can easily keep up with what they’re creating and make sure my faves aren’t overlooked or lost in an Etsy endless scroll that I do on my phone while I’m watching Homeland. Anyone else? Just me? Cool.

Below, my personal favorite Black makers on Etsy. Bookmark this post and come back to it any time you’re looking for a great gift, new piece of home decor or clothing, or special treat for yourself, and know that your purchase is supporting the independent makers and creators of Etsy.

Candice Luter: I don’t even have the words for how much I love Candice Luter’s work. It’s home decor, but it is also very much ART. Mirrors become conversation pieces, bare walls become opportunities. These pieces are timeless treasures that become part of your “permanent collection” and make you feel like a home filled with art you love is a real possibility. (Added to this list October 2020)

EmmaMakeStudio: Artwork is without a doubt one of the best reasons to shop on Etsy, and I love how Emma’s work feels ageless. It would look just as at home in a child’s bedroom as it would in a living room gallery wall. She offers printables and physical prints as well!

SupplyPlantShop: Why is it so hard to find affordable plants? This Indiana-based shop is fixing that. Their prices are amazing and their plants add a burst of green wherever your decor could use a little life. Brb just need to go find a hanging basket for a Philodendron so my cat doesn’t eat it.

ForTheCultureTees: If you can pick a favorite from among these tees, sweatshirts, face coverings, and mugs, I commend you. There are seemingly endless options to choose from. Be prepared to tell everyone you meet while you’re outdoor dining where you got your tee, because they’ll ask.

WicksNOLA: New Orleans is a place I visit often, and it’s dear to my heart. I am also obsessed with scented candles. Clearly a maker who combines two of my loves has my attention. The coolest part of WicksNOLA is the breadth of options in terms of scents, and the level of specificity in each combination that’s been inspired by something uniquely New Orleanian. Please review their scents and note the level of detail given to each one. There are also SO MANY OPTIONS, though Bywater stands out to me…

Designed In Neverland: If you’ve been loving everyone’s super cute lettered bracelets that they love to flash around in their Instagram stories, here’s a way to shop them that’s direct-to-maker. They also have the added benefit of being incredibly affordable! Would “A Single Serving Podcast” fit on a a bracelet…?

OTY Ceramics: I loooooove ceramics. Love. Give me the things made of pottery. I always loved pottery class but let’s just say I wasn’t going to win any prizes for my work. OTY Ceramics however, certainly will. This Etsy shop is amazing for housewarming gifts, or if you’re looking to complete a tablescape with something handmade and unique.

Breezy Tee: Breezy Tee has made appearances on this site before, and for good reason. This 5-star Etsy shop sells wraps, towels, beanies, scrunchies, and more—essentially anything you need to protect your hair, dry your hair, style your hair, or keep warm from the forehead-up. When I say countless colors and styles, I do mean it.

The Heart Department: Yes, this is your new go-to for gifts of all kinds, but please know you’re free to just keep everything for yourself because it’s that cute. Tanalee’s site specializes in all kinds of wooden display pieces that bring style, warmth, and personalization into your space. Custom pieces are available too!

House Of Sanaa: I mean, can you handle the cuteness? Because I myself, cannot. Most of House Of Sanaa’s offerings are adult sized (and just as stylish) but I love the kids’ options from this maker. I’m partial to the sweatshirt for kiddos shown here, but being a massive fan of all superhero franchises, the Wakanda University options also stand out.

Hortiki Plants: Seed and gardening kits have been extremely popular since um…March 2020, but Hortiki Plants have been offering in-home DIY options since well before that. Victoria’s 5-star rated Etsy shop has a ton of seed kit options that come with everything you need, and honestly they’re just really, really cute. I mean, I want to grow beets, don’t you?

AllVeryGoods: Lines between art and fashion are blurred in this stunning Etsy shop. I’ve listed work from this DC-based maker before, and I’m most certainly not done. The bandanas are the real standouts to me, but the shop also offers totes, lapel pins, prints…honestly you need to see for yourself.

Lovely Earthlings: This audience already knows and loves the work of Lovely Earthlings! Some of the most charming, female-focused printwork in existence can be found in this shop. I’m partial to the piece shown here, but I also see huge gift potential in this piece, too.

Nossboss Creations: I have a thing for macrame, but for me it loses a little luster when it’s mass-produced. It’s also really hard to just magically stumble upon a vintage piece. These handmade pieces are about to become the most complimented items in your home, I have no doubt. If you’re looking for a way to hang a SupplyPlantShop plant inside, start here!

LalusRootsNConjure: Yes, obviously a shop with crystals and sprays and sage and whatnot has my rapt attention. You can EASILY fill a cart just browsing though Lalu’s offerings. If you can’t make it to your favorite crystal shop during the pandemic (literally me), this is your new go-to.

CardCraftUS: We don’t send snail mail enough. There, I said it. CardCraftUS is inspiring more correspondence, one incredibly cute card at a time. Add your favorites to cart and get them now, so that you don’t run into the inevitable problem that arises when you want to send someone a card but you have no cards. By cards. Send mail. 2020.

TheEverydayPrintCo: I’m telling you, artwork. Etsy is FULL of amazing art, but selecting the right one is certainly helped by a little curation. Something about TheEverydayPrintCo’s work just makes my dream of a chic Parisian apartment feel closer, you know?
