18 Purchases For Single Women In July
We’ve emerged from the time portal that began in March, suddenly faced with July as if it has any business being here. It feels like we’re using a Chutes & Ladders game board as a 2020 calendar, honestly. Disorienting as daily life feels these days, there are ways to settle into a solo summer with a bit more calm, comfort, and fun than perhaps we’re giving ourselves. It is in that spirit I provide you with a list of items tailored to the needs and tastes of single women and those who identify as single women, as well as those who are non-binary and just like my work. I see you all, I shop with you all, and then I probably go put some ice in my wine and watch a spy movie. That is my truth.
Anklet: I’ve decided that I am now an anklet person, please join me on this journey. Doesn’t it sound nice to have something happy happening around your ankle? If I do leave the house to forage for food to stretch my legs around the neighborhood, I’m covered in sunglasses the size of a fanny pack and mask concealing the rest of my identity. In truth I fear for the future of Sephora if I never have to actually make my face presentable again. It is thus that I feel the need to express a bit more personality in other ways, and I’ve decided my favorite way is foot-region jewelry.
Jar Thingies: Look, single women can open their own damned jars. Let’s not give patriarchal notions of female strength any more airtime than they’ve previously had. All I’m saying is sometimes I can’t get into the salsa, and I need some help. As I live alone and the cat has no thumbs, these little rubbery thingies are just the ticket. Go forth, my friends, and fear no jam jar.
Solar Charger: I was super into independent survival shit before COVID-19, so you can imagine my delight in seeing all sorts of gadgetry emerge for the end of days. I already possess a hand-crank cellphone charger, but this bad boy runs on solar power! It’s designed to hang over the outside of your backpack while hiking, soaking up the sun’s rays as you trek along, but you can also just set it outside next to you while you’re reading a book or sitting in your baby pool or some other fun a less taxing activity to stock up on free power from the sky.
Kemi Telford Dresses: I have seen so many Instagrammers and newsletters sing the praises of Kemi Telford lately, I can’t not share her designs with you. If you love non-restrictive fabrics and styles in delightful patterns and palettes, you need to look into this brand. According to Kemi, “Our clothes encourage women to take up their rightful place. They encourage them to stop shrinking themselves.” Um…I like the sound of this.
Ice Roller: I’ve been using an ice roller for the last year in an effort to reverse the hands of time, and whether or not that’s actually happening, I can tell you this feels fantastic on my skin every morning, especially in the summer. I do feel like it increases the circulation in my skin and I certainly feel more awake and energized after each use. Also it’s just fun. Use it after you’ve applied your serum and face cream.
Bubly: I’m just gonna say it, Bubly is better than La Croix. There, I feel better. I have fallen in love with Bubly during the pandemic, as I like fizzy things to drink that are not alcoholic or full of sugar. I buy this stuff by the case and have thus spent much of my quarantine hydrated and happy. Favorite flavors include Blackberry, Watermelon, Pineapple, and Peach. Oh and Strawberry. Dammit they’re all amazing.
Perfect Everlane Dress: I don’t take the word “perfect” lightly, but I do think this Everlane dress deserves the word. Simple, comfortable, cross-back for crying out loud! It’s an excellent dress to have around this summer and any other when you want to feel like you got dressed but you also don’t really want to put any effort into that activity. I also like that this dress is bike short accommodating.
Insulated Mug: I’ve become the person who only drinks out of insulated mugs. You don’t think you’re going to turn into your mother, and then…somehow…you do. This one has a handle and thus makes me think it is for coffee, but please fill it with the beverage of your choice. It’s quarantine summer, this is no time to deny yourself a tasty beverage.
Zak Tumblr: Is this just the same thing as above, in a different shape? YEP. I have a shorter, mug-like insulated drink vessel, and a whole can of Bubly with ice won’t fit in it, so I need a bigger one that can meet my needs, okay?
Amore Pacific Treatment Enzyme Peel: I’m just gonna say it, this costs $60. I will also say that it is 100% worth it. I’ve done a complete cost-per-use analysis of this product and I think you will agree that 18 cents yes cents per use is well worth it to have the most baby soft and smooth face skin of your entire life.
Anti Fog Spray For Glasses: If you wear glasses and you also wear face masks (you totally do, right? RIGHT?!) you might have noticed how inconvenient it is when your mask fogs up your damned glasses. This is a little solution you can keep in your bag so that you do not lose your mind.
Watermelon Slicer: What is this sorcery and how fast can they deliver?
Thrive Market Membership: I have no idea what my quarantine would have been like without Thrive Market. It’s where I buy all my dry goods that I don’t need in a hurry, such as almond flour, coconut sugar, nuts and seeds, oils, etc. It’s an absolute emporium of healthy essentials, all discounted (and you can comparison shop all you want—Thrive is almost always the cheapest option). A yearly membership will get you unlimited free shipping on orders over $49 and they clearly show you your per-order savings and your annual savings which I think is really cool. Their in-house brand is incredible but I’ve also found some of my absolute favorite pantry essentials here. Also they sell Banza pasta for a full TWO DOLLARS cheaper than my local grocery store. What? Shipping takes about a week or so, so I usually keep a running list of the dry goods I need and then place an order about twice a month. Use my link to sign up and you’ll get 25% off your first order!
And in very, very cool news, Thrived has also curated a collection of items that are all from BIPOC owned brands!

Cooling Pet Mat: I know those of us with pets are worried about our precious fluffies overheating this summer. This mat (that comes in various sizes!) helps puppies and kitties keep cool in the what is shaping up to be an absolutely sweltering summer. If you wanna lay on this too, that’s your business.
Easy Dress: Speaking of perfect dresses, I love clothes that don’t actually touch my body, so this one’s a front runner for my next summer dress purchase. Basically if it’s a sack with arm holes and I can wear bike shorts with it, it’s happening.
Cooling Overnight Pads: Periods don’t care that it’s summer. Unfortunately. These overnight pads by The Honeypot are made from pesticide-free cotton and infused with essential oils—this creates a "cooling" effect that helps with cramps and discomfort. I am so intrigued. I am also a magpie for any sort of summer product that has the word “cooling” in it because I overheat quick, people.
Gracemade: I am so excited to share Gracemade with you! Linen fabrics are my favorite for summer because again, clothes that don’t actually feel like clothes are entirely my shit. I am partial to the jumpsuit featured here, and I cannot wait until real life resumes and I can wear it someplace special or just someplace that isn’t the grocery store, but there are also so many dress styles and colors that are easy and elegant at the same time.
Masks: Did you know Old Navy made masks this cute? Neither did I.
