16 Bummer Summer Finds For Single People
How is it August in four days? I’ll say this for Summer 2020, she’s quick. While this season doesn’t look even remotely like the kind of summer we typically enjoy, it is certainly teaching us how to make the best of things. So just because we’re socially distant, home way more than we want to be, and hidden behind fabric from our bottom eyelashes-down, that doesn’t mean we still can have a sweet summer. Below, a few helpful finds for this summer, such as it is.
Self Care Card Deck: How cool is this?? It’s a full card deck of self care practices and ideas designed by Under The Sunlight, a Black-owned business with an aesthetic that’s nothing short of delightful. I love all of their products, and truly I think their calendar is the only thing that could convince me to keep track of the days of this year at all, but I love this item especially because it’s just for you. It reminds us of the importance of self-kindness and attention and I think that’s marvelous. It’s also makes an amazing gift for someone you know who could use a little lift.
Embroidered Linen Face Masks: Not to be dramatic, but these are the cutest masks I’ve ever seen. They’re embroidered linen masks that are triple layered and washable. What’s really important is that they’re linen, meaning they’re the ideal fabric for a superhot summer wherein we all have to be masked up. The fact that they’re incredibly precious is pure bonus. Obviously I’m also partial to the cat version of these, but I also encourage you to check out all of this maker’s wares, stat.
Very Embroidered Mask: A little more pricey than the masks above, but also far more detailed, this mask is the finest in face accessories for summer. Also triple layered and washable, be very prepared to tell everyone you know where you got this.
Cuter Cords: We’re plugging in all sorts of fans and units and cooling devices of every sort. In addition to being semi-useless, this summer is also effing HOT. If you need a little more room to move, plug your items in with a cute extension core that doesn’t hurt your eyes with ugliness. These also allow you a lot more freedom to set up a WFH space anywhere in your home that you want, and I’m guessing we could all use a little switcheroo in the desk department at this point in quarantine.
Single Serving Keurig! When you think about it, it’s genius. With Keurig pods (or DIY reusable ones you make yourself) you’re only making one cup of coffee at a time anyway. Why have a huge machine taking up so much precious counter space? If you love coffee but can’t be bothered to actually….make it, this single-serving Keurig is right up our solo living alley.
I mean, how can you not.
Organic Tampons: That’s right, The Honey Pot has restocked! If you’ve been waiting to purchase organic tampons from this Black-owned business, you don’t have to wait any longer. They’re back in stock, and very conscious of the fact that we don’t want to put anything weird in our vaginas. It’s plant-based feminine care at its finest, ladies!
Custom Embroidered Tee: You don’t know this about me, but I love personalized shit. I live for a monogram, and I love anything with my name on it. I’ve spent a lifetime in airport gift shops disappointed because “Shani” isn’t exactly high on the list of names to put on a keychain. Anyway, this Etsy maker creates completely custom shirts, you can have them say anything you like, but I love a monogram or name on a cute tee.
Door Thingy: This is one of the smartest purchases I’ve ever made. When I moved into my new apartment, I noticed (rather quickly) that the scent of the cleaning solution used in my building’s common hallways was making me feel sick. I bought one of these babies, and STENCH NO MORE. Also it blocks drafts, so you don’t feel like your own personal A/C is cooling off your halls. It’s a cheap and easy solution to an annoyance, one of my favorite shopping categories.
Feminist Puzzle: This 1,000 piece puzzle is both certain to occupy your time and delight your feminist sensibilities. Featuring Joan of Arc, Malala Yousafzai, and other icons, I love this for keeping us busy indoors while quarantining, or for sending as a gift to ladies you love.
Makeup Setting Spray: There are over FIFTEEN THOUSAND reviews of this product on Amazon and it has a near-perfect track record. Also it’s $7. If something can make what meager makeup I can convince myself to wear right now stay put in this heat, it has my attention. That’s a LOT of reviews you guys.
Bread Bags: I love baking (and buying) bread, but I never know how to store it. I could get a bread box, but that’s counter space, and I could put it in ziplock, but that’s wasteful and also I don’t love what it does to the crust. Reusable bread bags are, first all—adorable, and second they’re the perfect way to keep your bread stored properly without creating any waste or sacrificing countertops. Now I just need to locate some Shewolf Sourdough…
Travel Cup: This is one of my personal favorite purchases of 2020. I bought this cup to take with me to Paris (sob) so that I could create less waste with my morning coffees, but it’s turned into one of my favorite things to take with me on walks when I leave the house. It collapses to take up minimal bag room, and it’s completely washable. The brand also makes extremely cute collapsable water bottles, too. Their products come in a ton of colors, if pink isn’t your fave.
Clever Candle: When I tell you I LOL’ed….
Initial Cheese Board: This crew loves a cheese board, and your favorite podcast host loves an initial. Let’s combine two of our favorite things into one cheese board that quite cleverly corrals the crackers into one place so that you’re free to distribute assorted cheeses everywhere else.
Lovely Earthlings Print: This group LOVED the last print I shared from this maker, and this one feels especially poignant at the moment. This time is temporary! At some point we will be back having coffee with friends, in person, sans masks, but until then here’s a beautiful reminder of fun times with friends.
