Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

Well…TikTok is a thing, and I realize I’ve been talking about helpful/fun things for singles (and everyone, honestly) lately, so they’re listed here! If I’m missing anything or if there’s anything you’d like my thoughts on, leave it in the comments below. xo

Computer Glasses: These are the very affordable computer glasses I wear in my videos, I love them because they’re light and I forget they’re on my face.

Open Book by Jessica Simpson: One of my favorite celebrity memoirs of all time. If you’re feeling like you just “can’t,” read all about how Jessica just did.

Flameless Candles: After purchasing THREE different sets, these are the ones that worked for me. They’re wax on the exterior and the flames flicker, so I think this is the closest to real candles you can possibly get. They use AAA (included!) and they operate with a remote. These are amazing for singles who don’t want to stress about fire risks with open flames, pets, etc.

My Candlesticks: You could also collect vintage candlesticks to get a really cool mismatched look, but if you want something more uniform these are really chic.

Elf Halo Glow: I mean come on now.

LED TV Lights: I LOVE affordable home decor for solo incomes, and these are the LED string lights I installed behind my television. They’re so fun and if I can instal them, I promise you can, too.

L’Oreal Glotion: Whoever designed this product deserves an award. Glowy but not sparkly, minimal coverage but also somehow way better than bare skin.

Nyx Concealer Serum: Given the efficacy of this product and the fact that it costs less than $9, I see no reason to use any other concealer ever again. I use the shade Beige and there is ALWAYS a backup tube of this at home because it’s so good that it sells out all the time. My under eyes don’t recognize themselves.

Flower Beauty Bronzer: I’m not a powder girl, but I will dust this shit all over my face in an attempt to look alive. I wear this all over my face and have been known to use it as eyeshadow, too. I also never leave the house without shellacking myself in their setting spray. I live in New Orleans humidity and my makeup stays put. If you need a better review than that I can’t help you.

These Socks: If you’re the kind of person who can ignore their no-show socks slipping beneath their heels I need to know your secrets because it makes me want to light a building on fire. These specific socks, and these alone, are the only ones I’ve ever worn that DO NOT MOVE. EVER. I own 12 pairs and all other no show socks have been disposed of.

Girlfriend Leggings: I stopped purchasing all other brands of leggings in 2016. These are THE compressive travel leggings that look and feel amazing and go with basically everything you already own. You can wear and wash these for YEARS before the slightest hint of wear starts to be visible.

No Days Wasted: If you too are having worse and worse hangovers as you get older (despite also drinking less WTF), this is the BEST way to not feel like full trash the next morning. I haven’t had a night out (or even a dinner out let’s be real) without this in three years. Use code SHANISILVER for 15% off.

My Skeletons: The best quality and most affordable full size skeletons for Halloween decor that I’ve ever come across.

Books!

Mine, obviously.

No One Tells You This, Glynnis MacNichol

This is for anyone newly (or not-so newly) 40 who would like to know that life isn’t an absolute wash from now on. I had never heard anyone talk about single life after 40 with any sort of optimism, much less the superiority Glynnis dances with at times in this book. We get to feel good about this, you guys.

Girl Walks into a Bar, Rachel Dratch

One of the most underrated celebrity memoirs of all time, I’ll say it. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Obviously Rachel is hilarious, but also honest and vulnerable in incredibly relatable ways. This book also highlights all the good that’s waiting for us after 40 where we’d previously only been taught to fear this stage of life like some sort of…I don’t know, global virus?

Nothing Personal, Nancy Jo Sales

If you despise the dating apps but simultaneously cannot tear yourself away from their abusive cycle, please read this book. It’s the push you need to stop putting up with the bullshit and also Nancy is one of the most talented writers I’ve ever read—I love her work.

It’s Not You (27 Wrong Reasons You’re Single), Sara Eckel

In many ways this is the Marvel origin story of the singlehood positivity movement. Sara is my most popular podcast guest of all time and you’ll get why once you see how brilliantly and logically she breaks down societal farces around singlehood. As a bonus, this is actually a great, easily digestible read for summertime.
